Iran Urges UN to Stop US Attacks as Tensions Escalate

ABUJA — Iran has urged the United Nations, governments and world leaders to intervene against what it described as continued US military attacks, as renewed hostilities between Washington and Tehran raise concerns over further escalation in the Middle East.

The call was made by the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Abuja in a statement issued on Friday, September 4, 2026. The embassy accused the United States of violating Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity following attacks reported on August 30 and September 1.

Iran said the latest attacks had caused civilian casualties, particularly in southern parts of the country. The embassy highlighted an attack in Bandar Kuhestak, in Sirik County, Hormozgan Province, where a wedding ceremony was taking place.

Iranian officials have reported varying casualty figures from the incident. The Associated Press reported that five people were killed and at least 68 wounded, citing Iranian provincial officials. The Iranian Red Crescent had earlier reported four deaths and more than 50 injuries.

The United States, however, has said its military operations were directed at Iranian military capabilities. US Central Command said the September 1 strikes targeted facilities including air-defence systems, radar installations, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications infrastructure.

The renewed fighting followed a period of relative calm in the conflict. Reuters reported that US forces carried out fresh strikes against Iran on September 1 after Washington accused Iranian forces of attempting attacks against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and US personnel in the region. Iran subsequently launched missile and drone attacks against US positions and regional allies.

Iran has maintained that its military actions are defensive. In a separate statement at a UN Security Council open debate, Iran’s Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Gholamhossein Darzi, called on the council to take immediate measures against what Tehran described as US aggression.

Darzi argued that respect for the UN Charter, national sovereignty and international law was essential to preventing further conflict. He also said Iran would continue exercising what it considers its right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

The United Nations has previously warned that continued confrontation between Iran and the United States could have serious consequences beyond the region. In June, the UN Secretary-General urged both sides to return to negotiations and stressed the need to protect civilians and respect international law.

The latest escalation has also raised concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy route. Reuters reported on Friday that shipping traffic through the waterway remained well below its normal level amid the continuing US-Iran confrontation.

Iran’s latest appeal therefore puts renewed pressure on the UN and international governments to address the conflict diplomatically and prevent further military escalation.
