Peter Obi Makes ‘Ready to Die’ Declaration on 2027

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has said he is prepared to risk his life to ensure that votes are protected during the 2027 election, urging Nigerians to take an active role in safeguarding the electoral process.

Obi made the remarks on Thursday, September 4, 2026, at the “Obi Talks Nigeria” town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he spoke about the need for credible elections and greater voter participation.

The former Anambra State governor said voters should not allow themselves to be intimidated at polling units, arguing that citizens outnumber election officials and can collectively protect their votes.

“Nobody will intimidate us again at the polling booth,” Obi said, according to Legit.ng’s report of the event. He later added that he was “ready to die” in the effort to ensure votes count. citeturn0news0turn0news1

Obi recalls 2023 election controversy

Obi also referred to the controversy surrounding the 2023 presidential election, particularly the failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Results Viewing Portal, known as IReV, to upload results in real time as many voters had expected.

He said his political movement would be better prepared in 2027 and urged supporters not to repeat what he described as mistakes from the previous election.

The comments come as political parties and politicians intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections. The election is already attracting warnings over political violence, vote buying and the need to strengthen electoral institutions.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana recently warned that Nigeria’s democracy faces serious challenges ahead of the 2027 polls, citing electoral credibility, political violence and weaknesses in the judicial system. citeturn0news11

Calls for peaceful elections

Obi’s remarks have also emerged against the backdrop of wider appeals for peaceful participation in the next election.

President Bola Tinubu has previously urged political actors to avoid treating the 2027 election as a “do-or-die affair” and called for political campaigns to be conducted without violence and divisive rhetoric. citeturn0news14turn0news17

The emphasis on protecting votes is likely to remain a major issue as parties mobilise ahead of the election, with political leaders facing pressure to encourage supporters to participate peacefully and respect the outcome of a credible poll.

Obi’s latest statement has therefore placed voter responsibility and election-day vigilance at the centre of his message to supporters as the country moves closer to the Peter Obi 2027 election campaign.
