Mourinho Says Madrid Deserved Win Despite Betis Loss

SEVILLE, Spain — José Mourinho said Real Madrid deserved to win their LaLiga clash with Real Betis despite suffering a 1-0 defeat in Seville on Friday, September 4, 2026.

The result ended Madrid’s perfect start to the league season and handed Mourinho his first defeat since returning to the club. Real Betis secured all three points through a late goal from substitute Troy Parrott.

Mourinho was left struggling to explain the result after his side dominated significant periods of the match and created several opportunities.

The Portuguese coach said Madrid had played well and generated enough chances to win, but were ultimately punished for failing to convert them.

Real Madrid came close to opening the scoring in the first half. Vinicius Junior struck the post, while Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles made important saves to keep the hosts level.

Betis then found the breakthrough in the 81st minute. Parrott reacted quickest after Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had stopped a header from Nelson Deossa, finishing the rebound to put the home side ahead.

Madrid had a major opportunity to rescue a point in stoppage time after Vinicius was fouled inside the penalty area.

Kylian Mbappe stepped up to take the penalty, but Valles saved the French forward’s effort, preserving Betis’ victory. LaLiga’s official match report confirms the 1-0 scoreline and Mbappe’s missed penalty.

Real Madrid also had a late equaliser ruled out for offside after Carlos Espí appeared to have found the net. VAR intervened before the goal was

The defeat was particularly notable because Mourinho had warned before the match that Madrid would need to perform at their highest level to beat Betis away from home. He had described the Andalusian side as a strong opponent and highlighted Madrid’s difficult recent results there.

Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini subsequently defended his team’s approach after Mourinho questioned how the match had unfolded. Betis’ victory marked an important result against one of the early favourites for the league title.

For Mourinho, the immediate challenge will be to ensure Madrid respond quickly after losing their unbeaten start. The performance offered encouragement in terms of chances created, but the failure to score proved decisive.

The Mourinho Real Madrid Betis defeat leaves the Spanish giants needing to improve their finishing after a match in which they had opportunities to take all three points.
