Paris Saint-Germain suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Monaco on Friday, September 4, 2026, leaving the reigning Ligue 1 champions without a victory after their opening three league matches of the season.
The result at the Parc des Princes saw Monaco overturn a first-half deficit to maintain their perfect start and move to the top of the Ligue 1 table with nine points. PSG, meanwhile, have just two points from three matches.
PSG captain Marquinhos opened the scoring in the 31st minute, converting Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s delivery across the face of goal to give the hosts the advantage.
Monaco responded strongly after the interval. Flavio Nazinho levelled in the 58th minute with a header from Jordan Teze’s delivery before Stanis Idumbo completed the comeback in the 72nd minute, beating goalkeeper Matvey Safonov at the near post after receiving the ball from Aleksandr Golovin.
The defeat extends a difficult opening to PSG’s domestic title defence. They had drawn their first two league games against Rennes and Lille, surrendering leads late in both matches before finally suffering their first league defeat of the campaign against Monaco.
The result is particularly significant because Monaco entered the match as the league leaders after winning their opening two fixtures. Ligue 1 had reported before the game that Monaco were the only side with two victories from the first two rounds.
PSG’s domestic struggles come despite their status as back-to-back UEFA Champions League winners. UEFA confirmed that Luis Enrique’s side retained the European title in May after defeating Arsenal on penalties in the final.
Before Friday’s match, PSG also announced that Luis Enrique had extended his contract with the club until 2030. The club has similarly secured new deals for several key players as part of its long-term plans.
Monaco, managed by former Brazilian defender Filipe Luís, now have three wins from three Ligue 1 matches and sit seven points ahead of PSG at this early stage of the season.
For PSG, attention will now turn to ending their poor league run and preparing for their Champions League title defence, with Slovan Bratislava scheduled as their next European opponent.
The loss leaves the French champions with work to do if they are to quickly regain their domestic momentum.
