The Osun Police Indian hemp operation has led to the arrest of three suspects after officers recovered five bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp from an abandoned Toyota Sienna vehicle along the Moro-Ife Road.
The incident occurred on August 30, 2026, when operatives of the Osun State Police Command’s Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Team E, were conducting a routine patrol in the Moro area.
According to the command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, the officers noticed a silver-coloured Toyota Sienna Space Bus that had reportedly broken down and was left by the roadside.
The operatives became suspicious and searched the vehicle.
Police said the search led to the discovery of bags containing weeds suspected to be Indian hemp inside the Sienna.
Three men were subsequently arrested in connection with the vehicle and the suspected consignment.
They were identified as Awo Omotayo, 38; Abayomi Suleiman, 22; and Oluwatayo Samuel. The police also recovered the vehicles involved and took them to the command for further investigation.
Suspect allegedly names alleged organiser
Police said Omotayo later told investigators that a man known as “Baba Ibo”, who allegedly operates around the Garage Olode area of Osun State, contracted him to transport the suspected Indian hemp to Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
According to the police account, Baba Ibo allegedly had the contact details of the person expected to receive the consignment in Ogbomoso.
The police have not established the identity or whereabouts of the alleged organiser. Officers said efforts were ongoing to arrest him and identify other people who may be connected to the suspected trafficking operation.
Investigation continues
Osun State Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Zungura has directed investigators to intensify efforts to establish where the suspected illicit substance came from and who was expected to receive it.
The command said the three suspects remain part of an ongoing investigation, while the alleged fleeing suspect and other potential members of the network are being traced.
The latest seizure adds to ongoing police and drug-enforcement operations targeting the movement of prohibited substances across Nigerian states.
The suspects have not been convicted of any offence, and the allegations against them remain subject to investigation and possible prosecution.
